Private Label Show Amsterdam 2019 – a brief review

This year’s Private Label Show (PLMA 2019), also known as the “World of Private Labels”, was held at the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam from 21 - 22 May 2019. Every year, retailers and manufacturers from all over the world come together at this international trade fair to learn about new products, exchange ideas and make new contacts. EURASYP attented the event and learned that many manufacturers of organic products are still unaware that there are a multitude of biological yeast extracts ideally suited for use in organic foods.

Yeast products: Popular for more than 100 years

Ever since the Life Reform Movement (Lebensreformbewegung), which began in the mid 19th century, there has been much debate about vegetarianism and its practicalities. As long ago as the 1920s, nutritional yeast and yeast extract were used in health food products as a substitute for the amino acids found in meat and the savoury, meaty taste. Even in those days, one of the main reasons for the use of yeast products and yeast extracts was their nutritional value, while also providing that much-loved savoury, meaty taste.

A closer look at umami – the “fifth” taste
